To Pack Or Not To Pack That Is The Question

Share |

Moving is, often times, a very hectic experience but with proper planning, you can avoid the things that cause the headaches and make your moving experience a pleasant one. The first thing you need to do is find a credible moving company. It is very important to check them out thoroughly. Find out if they are contracting the work out to local movers or using their own people. Make sure that the company you use is licensed and bonded. These simple questions will help ease your nerves but there is still more to be done, to ensure that your items arrive safely to their new destination. Packing and boxing your valuables properly along with a reputable company will help minimize or eliminate damage to your belongings. Make sure you inspect all your items for damage before they are packed and loaded. Photo cataloging each one of your important pieces is a simple way of proving damage caused by the movers. In addition, if you are using long distance movers, you should ask if the same crew or company that started the process is going to be completing it. Often times, the same people that start the move won’t be the ones to finish it and if there is any damage it can become the blame game from hell. This is one of those times when doing your homework really pays off. Packing and boxes are also two of the biggest expenses in moving. Many companies charge by the hour to pack your belongings which can add up quickly and moving companies often charge for the packing materials. You can eliminate expensive hourly rates and the cost of packing materials by simply purchasing them and packing yourself. Although, a trip to your local department store can get you boxes free of charge. However, if you know that packing is not your cup of tea, letting the pros do it will cost you less in the long run. Find out how much the boxes and packing material costs and compare it with what the moving company is charging, to determine if it’s worth it to you to buy everything yourself. Remember, it is important for you, or someone you trust, to stay with the movers throughout the entire process. Damage is not the only thing that can go wrong. If you are able, moving on your own or with the help of your neighbors is a great way to save money.
